Does Teeth Whitening really work?

The surface of the teeth contain millions of microscopic pores and over time organic compounds from food, fizzy drinks, tea, coffee and tobacco etc. settle into these pores and cause discolouration of the tooth enamel. Almost all natural teeth respond to the process, however, there are some individual teeth that take longer then others to whiten, such as those with tetracycline antibiotic staining.

Who can benefit from teeth whitening?

Almost anyone over the age of 16 who have their own teeth and desire a more confident smile will benefit from teeth whitening. However, pregnant and nursing clients should consult their doctor before using any teeth whitening product. Certain medical conditions may also preclude treatment.

How long will treatment last?

This depends on the lifestyle, age, diet, tooth structure and oral hygiene of the client. The Laser procedure may last between 18 to 24 months with booster treatment every 6 to 12 months. However, it should be noted that Black coffee and tea, red wine and smoking will stain the teeth.

What about crowns, veneers, bridges, fillings and false teeth?

The system will not harm crowns, veneers, bridges, fillings or false teeth however they will not be lightened beyond the original colour. It should be noted that after treatment natural teeth may become whiter than the colour of the implants. This is because your dentist will have matched the implant to the colour of the teeth at that time of fitting.

Will teeth whitening damage the enamel of the teeth?

No, years of research indicate that tooth whitening is safe and effective with no adverse impact on fillings and no softening of the tooth enamel. Research data shows there is no risk to the enamel of the teeth other than the advised 24-48 hour temporary sensitivity.

Will teeth whitening damage the soft tissue (gums)?

People with periodontal disease (gum disease) or excessive caries (cavities) should be treated by their dentist prior to using any teeth whitening products. The active ingredient in the gel is safe but if prolonged sensitivity of the gums beyond the normal 24-48 hours does occur it could indicate a pre-existing condition.
